Mindfulness: Why You Should Give It a Try

Updated: Dec 7, 2020

Have you ever wondered what mindfulness is? Have you ever been intrigued by the idea of if? If the answer is yes, read more about it below

If you’re here, chances are you have heard about mindfulness and are wondering if it could be something for you. Perhaps you stumbled upon an ad for a mindfulness app, saw a new yoga class on your gym programme or are simply looking for a way to get rid of the College stress. Whatever the case, we think we can help and here is why.

But firstly, what is mindfulness?

The Oxford dictionary defines it as: a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment”. All nice and fancy in proper British style, but what does this mean in practice? It is simple. Rather than letting your thoughts run wild between all the different things on your mind, practising mindfulness will help you focus your attention on the present, acknowledging and accepting your feelings, thoughts and sensations without judgement. Simply put, for a few minutes you will almost become a spectator of your own life.

Why should you practice mindfulness?

Everyone has the ability to be mindful, but regular practice can help grounding yourself in the present moment when you are feeling overwhelmed by what is asked of you. For example, we have all been stressed out by the number of classes to attend, projects to complete and let’s be honest - in a pre-COVID world - pints to drink out with friends. Sometimes we feel like we don’t have time or energy to keep up with it all. At least most of us do. If you are the exception, maybe you are a Superman/woman and mindfulness is not for you, but if you are not I suggest you give it a try.

How can we help?

We have established the first Mindfulness Society here at Trinity College Dublin to bring together students interested in the practice of mindfulness (and some meditation - more to come in future blogs so keep an eye out) to help them make a start towards becoming mindful human beings. We do this by running weekly mindfulness sessions, special events throughout the year and this weekly blog, which we hope you will find filled with helpful tips and suggestions in your mindfulness journey.

If you want to participate and learn more about mindfulness, join our society and subscribe to our email newsletter. We would love to have you on board.

Stay Mindful,
